Kuilei Cliffs Beach Park and Amelia Earhart Lookout

Highlights:
  • Scenic lookout
  • Seals at the beach
  • Amelia Earhart memorial
Description:
Located on the southeast shore of Oahu just at the foothills of Diamond head between Diamond Head Beach Park and Kaalawai Beach, Kuilei Cliff Beach Park. The park provides a nice location for getting away from crowded picnic areas and also some very fantastic sightseeing. The park has a rocky beach. The location is fantastic for surfing, but you need to have already enough experience since when the swells are up, the waves can be quite high.  The park covers an area of about 11 acres, but the beach is quite small and narrow. The beach sand glitters in the sun and have a greenish hue.

Kuilei Cliffs Beach Park is very popular for surfing, windsurfing, snorkeling and fishing. The beach is accessed by walking down a paved trail that is near three drive-in lookouts. The lookouts offer a panoramic view of the surroundings that is breathtaking. The lookout at the center is a memorial site for Amelia Earhart (1898-1939), She was the first women to have flown across the Atlantic Ocean  in 1935.

You might encounter some seals warming up at the beach. You should not try to approach them.  They are a nice sight to see, but if you get too close, you risk being chased by the seals. They do not like to be bothered much. The area around Kuilei Cliffs Beach Park was not always that beautiful. It was once a dry, dusty and barren cliff.  Some $80,000 had been spent for landscaping and irrigation to turn the area on the Makai side of Diamond Head into a lush green walkway leading to Kuilei Cliffs Beach Park. The project was the vision of a woman, Amy Brown, who kept shepherding the city. It was after the attack of September 11, 2001 that Brown thought that the area was a great location for people to rejuvenate their spirit. After four years the then barren land has turned into an enjoyable park great for spending quality time.

Kuilei Cliffs Beach Park has a few facilities that include shower and parking which can be found along Diamond Head Road. There are no lifeguards, but the area is great fun to enjoy the sea if you are experienced.  It does not provide very good conditions for swimming.
