Upper Sandy Beach

Sandy Beach Park

Highlights:
  • Bodyboarding and bodysurfing
  • Picnic at the beach
  • Snorkeling
Description:
Sandy Beach Park on the east side of Oahu is well known for two  good reasons, the beautiful beach sand and  powerful shore breaks. Getting to this beach will have you drive along the lava cliff side of Koko Head crater. The beach is just beyond the popular Halona blow-hole. During the summer period when the beach is often calm, the offshore reef that protects it also provide very good conditions for swimming, snorkeling and diving. The soft sand, the gentle water and the ease of entry into the water attracts families with small children seeking to spend some fantastic moments on the seaside.

Sandy Beach is not almost always gentle. In fact, the locals in Hawaii call it "the beach of broken necks". It is listed as one of the most dangerous beaches in Hawaii. You must always be on the look out for red warning flags and signs posted on the beach warning of the dangers of strong currents, high surf, sharp coral, and dangerous shore breaks. Sandy beach is popular among experience body surfers and body boarders.

In the winter months, there are powerful shore breaks and rip tide currents during high surf. You should avoid swimming in front of Keawaakio Cove even when the water seems calm because of rip tide currents.

Sand Beach Park does not provide scenic views like many other beaches in the surrounding, but it does provide a lot of thrill. One of the things you will notice is that the sand on the beach seems to get everywhere. On your hair, nose, ears, swimwear, even after having taken a shower, you will still be brushing off sand.

The beach has all the facilities of a modern beach including lifeguards. there is not much shade on the beach but a grassy area with some picnic tables can be found which is perfect for relaxing, taking photos or watching the waves.

There are always huge shore breaks here
Overall:
There are always huge shore breaks here. That being said, there is always an ambulance here too. Getting in the water here is not for the faint of heart, but it's always amazing to watch the locals "play" in the water. Crowded only on the weekends.

I surf here as much as possible
Overall:
I surf here as much as possible. Small days are when I have seen most broken necks or backs. Bigger days are more obvious to the inexperienced but one to three feet has ended many a life here. Even for us locals we respect this beach. RIP Lance who we lost bodysurfing early morning. Eye candy awesome social scene awesome worth a look,

Overall:
Was on a Hawaii vacation with my family and we stopped by here one of the afternoons we were in Oahu. We were stopped by a lifeguard when we went to go swim and he warned us that there's really bad currents and that a lot of people get injured/hurt here every year while swimming. There were also a lot of signs up and down the beach warning people to not swim. We were just looking for a nice beach ... moreto spend time as a family and swim for a little bit so this wasn't really what we were looking for. There was quite a few people there and a ton of people out surfing though so if that's more what you're looking for this seems to be a good spot for that. That being said there wasn't any place to rent surfboards or anything. There also wasn't anywhere to buy food or drinks there. It definitely seemed like more of a local kind of hang out spot.

Beautiful picturesque beach begged us to go try out and see what the locals were doing, many years ago. We ignored the dangerous beach warnings cuz we're good swimmers and all, and we just went out and hung with a bunch of kids that were bobbing in the waves. Next thing I know the kids are going out farther, and too late we see the wave coming. We tried diving into the wave that had to be 8'-10' feet ... moretall, but it got us and tumbled us up the beach. We seriously thought we were going to drown. At the last minute I found the sand in about 2 feet of water and stood up just in time to see the second monster wave break on top of me and do the same damn thing. That was enough for us. Leave this beach to the locals unless you just wanna watch. Lots of other much safer beaches to learn how to body surf or whatever.... Awesome scenic beach, though.
