King
David Kalakaua once owned the Both the Kapiolani Park and the garden. The Garden and the adjacent Kapiolani park were opened in 1972 many many years after he
donated the land for public use in 1877. The King named the park in honor
of his wife, Queen Kapiolani. Once you enter in Her Majesty's park, you come
across vibrant oranges, deep reds and delicate pink flowers. These
flower also represent some of the rare species both from Hawaii and other parts
of the world. You'll also find a collection of rare Lokelani roses, one of
Hawaii's most elusive plant species. The colorful, refreshing gardens offer a
welcome escape from the surrounding urban environment in Waikiki.
