Description:

Snorkel with sharks, that's right NO CAGE, just you and the sharks, in this awesome experience!

The: What, Where, When, How, and Why of diving with Sharks:

WHAT:

The "Pelagic Shark Program" Also known as the "Pelagic Animal Research and Interaction Program" or what some people simply refer to as: "The snorkel with sharks without a cage." Is an extensively developed program based on shark behavioral research and data collection integrating educational information adapted for the general public to utilize in order to reduce or avoid adverse shark interactions.

WHERE:

Specific survey sites identified as natural aggregation areas are used to approximate local shark populations and movements by surveying the number of sharks present in specified areas and depth profiles during specific times of the day and year. Seasonal movements of shark species divided by gender and weather patterns are recorded to identify differences in behavior.  Lack or abundance of mesopredators are looked at during the trips for correlation studies.  Participants can contribute to the digital shark ID program by submitting photos from their dive (snorkel/freedive) if they attain clear identifiable images of the left profile, right profile, and top side of any "easily identifiable" shark.  If the shark is not already listed in the digital ID, the submitting photographer is asked to name the shark and regular updates on the sharks site fidelity are shared.

WHEN:

The Pelagic Shark Program starts when you board the One Ocean Diving research and dive vessel, "Pono Kai."   You'll board the 27ft white vessel with a blue canopy at the commercial loading zone of Haleiwa Harbor (closest area to Haleiwa Joes Restaurant) near the white scaffolding/fish scale.

HOW:

Your guides will welcome you onboard and you will be asked for your shoe size so the crew can get you fitted with a pair of fins.  We offer a variety of snorkeling fins and free diving blades (advanced design fins) mostly from #Cressi brand for your use.  This is also great opportunity to try out professional free diving fins without having to buy a pair first.  Once the crew has you sorted with fins, a mask, and snorkel, and optional rash guard you will be asked to store any items that are not going in the water with you in the vessels cab to assure they stay dry and are protected.  Your captain will give you a safety briefing and very important information about the vessel and emergency protocol in case of the unlikely event of an accident/injury (Rest assured OneOceanDiving staff and owners have a 100% safety record and are trained experienced experts working for over ten years in water with sharks, focusing on shark behavior, and train and run regular emergency response drills for trauma.)   Keep in mind you are several hundred thousand times more likely to be injured on the drive to the harbor than during your experience and time in the open ocean, so drive carefully.)

After the safety briefing the vessel will leave the harbor and begin the 10-15 min trip out to the survey/dive site.  On the ride out your marine biologist and safety diver/Divemaster will give you a lot of fascinating and useful information including:

  • What types of marine animals you will see both near and offshore.

  • What species of pelagic fish and sharks to look for and how to tell the difference between each species.

  • How to determine gender and the differences in behavior

  • What specific behavior/body language to look for.

  • How the animals biology and physiology effect their behavior.

  • How your behavior effects their behavior.

  • How to deter or entice a shark or pelagic animal.

  • You will also learn about how weather and seasons effect the animals behavior and how it can effect your specific trip based on the current weather pattern.

  • You will learn about Mano (sharks) and their significance in Hawaiian and Polynesian culture.

  • You will learn about the current studies and how to contribute or support the ID program and Hawaii Shark Count

  • Very important information about how to safely and respectfully swim around sharks as well as what to do in the unlikely event of an adverse approach or presence of agnostic body language, this "Safety Rules and Guidelines" information will be shared within the last five minutes prior to getting into the water so it is fresh in your mind.

Once arriving at the aggregate zone the marine biologist/divemaster will enter the water 1st to survey the pelagic species, ID specific individuals present, determine the most dominant individuals, and number of pelagics present for the research data set.  After the initial information is shared with the captain on board the first three individuals will don their snorkel gear and walk down the swim ladder and into the water to float on the surface while the sharks and other pelagic species swim around the boat.  The marine biologist will constantly monitor the sharks, other pelagics, and public program participants for changes in behavior and social dynamics.  Your in-water guide will periodically relay information to the captain or one of the research interns on board for the research data set.

After the initial 20 min the first three people will exit the water and the second group of three will enter (sometimes it is possible to rotate in water based on current conditions and animal behavior.) Depending on the animals behavior and current water conditions and individual persons comfort and snorkeling abilities it is sometimes possible to allow more than three persons in the water at a time.  After the first rotation both groups will switch and have an additional 30 min each in the water.  (Depending on weather conditions, animal behavior, commuting to and from site, and groups showing up and leaving on time, and doning and adjusting gear/getting in and out of the water, the average person spends around 45-95 minutes in the water.)

WHY:

Once you come back on board you will likely have a completely different view of sharks, a realistic perspective and most likely a calmness and excitement about just how incredible they are.  You will get to see for yourself that they do not look at humans as a natural prey item and you'll get to see just how beautiful they are for yourself.

While on board between rotations you will be able to talk about your interactions, what specific behavior you observed, which specific individual sharks or pelagic fish, dolphins, or whales were present.  The rotations also give you a great opportunity to be able to swap around your dive gear if desired, adjust camera settings, and talk to the captian about what you experienced and the current plight of sharks and conservation efforts and needs around the world.  This is a major highlight of the program, to be able to talk to experts in their field and help get involved with the change we hope this program inspires.

The surface time is also great opportunity to look for whales and dolphins. *whales are seasonal in Hawaii November to May/during the winter months. Dolphins are seen year round but not as frequently on the north shore as the west side of Oahu.

After everyone has at least two rotations we will make our way back in towards to harbor keeping an eye out for other pelagic life like dolphins, flying fish, sea birds, whales, and we can even stop by a honu (turtle) cleaning station where you can see sometimes up to 15 turtles being cleaned by small fish.)  Your marine biologist/Safety diver will talk with you about which sharks and other pelagic species and specific behavior you encountered on you adventure.  The marine biologist will share information about the current research and population trends and plight or threats to sharks globally.

Before arriving back at the dock you will be given a hot peppermint and tea tree oil face towel to freshen up with and cards with great information about how you can #HelpSaveSharks and Help protect marine life.

One of the greatest experiences of my life. Did this about 2 weeks ago at 12pm, swam with about 10 or so galapagos sharks and various fish. The staff are very friendly and will make you feel at ease if you are nervous. Very informative info about sharks and there behaviour, you will definitely see sharks in a different light after you do this. I spent 10 days in hawaii for my honeymoon and this was ... morecomfortably the highlight. Highly recommend

This tour is amazing! I highly recommend it! The crew is very knowledgeable and awesome. I loved every second of it and swam with a lot of Galapagos sharks and also saw a Hammerhead shark, which is pretty rare! These are beautiful and amazing creatures and I felt safe the entire time. ... more

We went on a Thursday morning at 11 am and easily found parking. I suggest taking a Dramamine just incase you get motion sickness, I took one and only felt a little sick on the way back. Also, pay the extra $50 for the GoPro footage, it's worth it and so much easier to just enjoy your time swimming and diving rather than worrying about catching the footage. They provide you with a list of things to bring, really just a towel and water. They provided a nice snorkel mask and fins. I have small feet and I was fine with using the smallest size they had and then a band that keeps them in place.

If you're even thinking about going, do it!!! You won't regret it.

I went shark diving here 3 years ago and had an amazing experience. The people are super friendly and the place is easy to find. Our guide gave us instructions about the sharks the whole way out, not just how to swim safely with them, but also information on their efforts to conserve the sharks. What I like most about one ocean diving is that it isn't just a tourist destination but an opportunity ... morefor you to become educated on the reality of sharks, and part of the money you pay is used for research and shark conservation. I loved this experience!

WOWZA such an unreal experience!! Not only is it a thrilling activity to swim in open waters with sharks, but it is an eye-opening experience that will alter your perceptions about sharks. The staff gave an informative spiel about the different depths of the ocean and what you should or shouldn't do near sharks. I felt safe with the staff in the water. It was so exciting to swim with 20+ pelagic sharks ... moreand I would definitely do this tour again!

We had the most amazing opportunity to free dive with Galapagos and Sandbar sharks about 5 miles out from Haleiwa. Wow, what a sight to see them up close and watch them swim around us and I was shocked how peaceful and beautiful these interactions are. I highly recommend joining them and learn about sharks behavior and how important they are for our ocean! Thank you Ocean and Juan for such an incredible ... moreexperience that I will never forget and thank you for taking amazing underwater pics of us and educating us.

Amazing experience and I LOVE the educational component. I would definitely recommend this place to snorkel with the sharks as opposed to being in a cage to see them. However, it did seem pretty pricey compared to other similar tours on the island, but we felt it was a good cause because I imagine some of that cost funds their research efforts.... more

Also, I would not spend the $60 on the leggings, the material is incredibly thin and they run small. We bought a t-shirt though and it seems to be good quality.

Since childhood and watching Jaws, I've always had a fear of sharks. Forest and Kay did an amazing job educating us on the boat ride out. It was an absolutely amazing experience! So majestic and hypnotic watching these amazing animals. I was completely relaxed and never felt an ounce of fear. It's very eye opening and life changing experience. Recommend for all ages.

Great team and experience with the now world famous One Ocean diving. The booking experience was easy, and it was easy to see how much the staff cared about their work and the broader mission. They did a great job prepaing us for what we would experience, and continually emphasized the safety of the divers and animals throughout the experience.... more

We saw a total of 15 sharks from 2 different species, as well as some whales on the ride back in. I got the GoPro package and I'd recommend that so you have photos, but would also recommend speaking with the team about how to get a pic with you close to the shark beforehand.

I have been adventuring and living on Oahu for 5 years, this is hands down one of the most exhilarating, breath taking and most awesome thing I have done in all Hawaii. This is definitely an adventure everyone should do!  I felt comfortable, confident and informed with Jules keeping my friends and myself safe, we even got to free swim with the 35 amazing sharks that joined us for our snorkel tour. ... more(December 18, 2016 @7AM)

Life changing! I recommend this experience for EVERYONE. If you have a fear of sharks(like most people) this will undoubtedly change your opinion. I was nervous at first to get in the water but as soon as I got in I was fearless! The guides explained how to behave in the water and what to look for to spot some "famous" sharks. Ocean was the first in the water and she counted about 40 sharks.. lucky ... moreus! Once we were in she would tell us when we could free swim or when we needed to hold onto the boat line. It was very professional, very controlled, and so safe I cannot emphasize enough. It was amazing to be around such a dominate creature in their own territory.. and still feel comfortable.
We got a full hour in the water and we even spotted a scalloped hammerhead towards the outer boundaries.
On the ride back, they gave us more information about pelagic research and how we can help save sharks. I have always been a shark lover.. but I would now consider myself an advocate.

So much fun! Thank you One Ocean Diving!

Informative on the back ground of sharks as well as raising awareness on protecting them.  Everyone should view these sharks in their environments with out the cages. How beautiful these unique creatures Everyone should experience for yourself...... more
Such first-hand information you will not find in any guidebook.
If you want to learn more in the near future, Ocean Ramsey is your best bet - She give you easy follow instructions on how to dive and how to be safe around the sharks. Try if for yourself, you would not regret it.

Absolutely love diving with One Ocean! Having done it now 3 times. The crew especially Kayleigh explain so much knowledge and really stress the importance of sharks in the ocean! She explained behaviors to look out for when in the water that helped me feel safe, and calm watching beautiful sharks gliding all around me! The entire crew on each boat haven't let me down and it's always an adventure in ... morethe PonoKai. I feel leaving hungry for more and wanting to spread my knowledge of sharks and the oceans with anyone I meet. I am excited to keep doing pelagics with Juan, Ocean, Kayleigh, Julie, Eli and the whole crew!! Mahalo guys!!!!

Hands down the best experience of my life! I was scared out of my mind before leaving the harbor but our guide, Kayleigh immediately changed that when she started explaining the science and "marine biology" behind what and why they do what they do. From our captain to our guide, everything was awesome. I felt safe, had fun and came back more educated than 7 years of watching Shark week. While it sounds ... morescary, it's anything but. Getting into the water is the hardest part. This is an absolute must for any thrill seeker.

Best experience in Hawaii best experience in my life and I live here in paradise. First off I was so scared the first time I entered the water but after 5 mins it was a very relaxed experience - free to dive on your own or stay on top of the water your choice. I am so glad I did booked this. Forget cages and the hoards of tourists that got there get the real experience the educational experience ... morethe conservation experience and go with ocean one diving they are awesome!

You won't regret it I'm still in awe that I swam with sharks without a cage! I would do it again no questions asked! I loved this experience I can't say enough!

If you are debating don't just book it! One person on my boat had gone many times before and was back for more!

Forget all the other hawaii tours and activities you have planned for your Hawaii trip and make room to go on a One Ocean dive. You will not regret it.  Most people have a fear of sharks, my husband and I included....until One Ocean! We just completed our second dive and would do it again and again and again. They are understanding that most people attending are scared of sharks and will prepare you ... morefor the dive. Probably even change your perception of sharks ;-)

RECOMMENDATIONS:
1. If you are prone to sea sickness or even if you aren't sure--bring SEA BANDS or sea sickness medicine. I've been on boats before without getting sick, but got sick on both our dives. Wished I would've prepared so I could enjoy the whole experience fully.

2. Bring plenty of dry clothes to change into afterwards

3. They offer rash guards--great for protection from jellyfish stings and sunburns :)

A must if you're staying on Oahu!  Got to spend so much time in the water and the weather was great. The group working the dive was amazing! So friendly and knowledgable. I do recommend taking something for motion sickness, even if you have never gotten sea sick before (lesson learned). Better safe than sorry, because you really won't want to miss out on any time in the water! Got to spend a good ... moreamount of time in the water with about 16 sharks. We didn't have to hold on to the rope attached to the boat as other reviews stated, perhaps we just had better weather conditions. The only downside is that Ocean and Juan were off on a trip so I couldn't book photography, even though I was told that they would be available for photography before I booked that date. So besides the miscommunication there, I had a great experience.
I paid for a go pro video instead. To be honest, if you have a go pro I'd just take the video yourself. I paid for a go pro video in addition to mine so I would have some footage of me swimming with the sharks, but I don't have any good shots of me with sharks in all of the footage I was sent. So if you do pay for it, I would specifically state that you want some good footage of you with sharks around you and not just of the sharks.
So to recap- amazing group working the dive, awesome experience, and overall just an absolute must do!
One of the coolest experiences i've had, would definitely do it again!

'm not going to deny it; initially I was pretty nervous about swimming with sharks because as with most people I had developed a negative perception due to the media. It had definitely heightened with all the shark attacks that happened the week prior to our trip. However, after diving with One Ocean Diving I developed a new sense of respect for them and actually felt completely at ease in the water. ... moreAt first I was really hoping not to see a tiger or great white, but when they said there was a tiger roaming on the outside I got a little excited.

The experience itself was amazing, the only thing I did not like was our lack of freedom but I know it was for safety purposes especially because the day we came they were very curious and us roaming freely would make their job much harder, especially since we tend to scatter. In the future I think it would have been more beneficial if we had come in a smaller group. With five people hugging the side of the boat it made it a little difficult to move anywhere without kicking someone in the face (as my friend kept doing to me).

The crew was awesome and they were extremely knowledgeable. You could tell that they were passionate about what they did. It was a totally different experience from shark cage diving where they head out, put you in the cage, and done. They spent the entire trip out and back teaching us about shark behaviors, what we could to expect to see, how to tell the difference between the sharks, as well as the dangers sharks face because of humans. I won't go into much detail because you should definitely experience it for yourself and I don't want to spoil it for you.

If you're debating whether to go in a cage or not, don't. It's definitely a better experience without it. Without the cage you're among the sharks and you get a better sense of their behaviors. On the other hand, in a cage I felt like an animal in the zoo. Except I was an animal equipped with a GoPro and I was more worried about getting a picture than the experience itself (and if you were wondering, yes I got kicked in the head in the cage as well).

Usually with most things that are a little pricey I'm a one and done type of person, but I would actually consider going out with One Ocean Diving again, and hopefully next time I'll see something new.
