Koele is a small land as referred by the meaning of its name in the
ancient Huwaiian word, Ko'ele. It is known for its dark rainy clouds, drawn
down across Koele from Kaiholena Valley and the slopes of Lanaihale that lie
above.
From
this town sprang the great ranch complex that was scattered in different places
in Lanai. The town is known for its perfect climate for raising livestock. In 1893, the island was inhabited by numbers
of sheep, lambs, horses, horned cattle, goats and hogs, in addition to a great
number of wild turkeys.
Until
1950, everything in this town was focused on ranching but after this date the
town turned into farming as pineapple industry flourished in Lanai.
