Opaekaa Falls is one of the best-known waterfalls in Kauai.
It’s viewed as the lookout off of Kuamoo Road, but it’s a difficult hike to get
to the top and the pool. If you want to see it up close, follow the trailhead
to the top to a 2-mile marker.
This trip is very difficult but considered well worth it by
many people who have gone there. Be careful because the trail is often found to
be muddy and it takes about a half hour. The view of Opaekaa Falls is nothing
short of stunning with its tropical rainforest surroundings and various
photographic opportunities.
Most people will only go as far as the highway lookout, so
you’ll find a trip there to usually be rather quiet and peaceful. Named after “rolling
shrimp” in the Hawaiian language this waterfall used to have a large amount of
shrimp in its stream and pool. You won’t find many of them their now, sadly.
Despite the trick access, this hike is a strenuous one that
is great for groups and well worth it when you spend a few hours to a day
taking a dip in this grand geographical feature.
