Morning 2 Tank Dive Charter

Island:
BIG ISLAND
Dive Type:
Boat Dive
Certified Dive
Snorkel Only Ride Along
Inclusions:
Snacks
Water
Description:
Enjoy two morning dives at two different locations in Kona, Hawaii's pristine waters where you may see endemic tropical fish, view the many formations made by old lava flows, observe green sea turtles, spot the hard to find octopus, and many more wonderful creatures.  Often, we have dolphins who escort our boat as we leave the harbor.  During the winter months humpback whales are spotted during our surface interval and you may even hear them sing underwater.

What is included?

We provide tanks, weights, and professional guides who will give you a thorough briefing of the dive site, what marine life we may expect to see, and a guided tour of the area.  Fresh fruit, snacks, and water is provided during your surface interval while the crew changes your gear over to a fresh tank.  On the way back to the harbor the crew breaks down your gear leaving you to enjoy the ride home.  We would also be happy to store the gear for your next charter.

Dive Requirements:

Divers are required to bring their certification card (no c-card = no diving) and are expected to have been on a recent dive, at least within the past 2 years.  If you have been dry over 2 years we do require a check out dive to be completed before joining the dive group.

Certified Divers: Divers are required to have their Open Water Certification and to bring their certification card (no card = no diving).  We would be happy to help you find your certification, but sometimes we find them and sometimes we don't (which means no diving and no refund) so please let us help you early.  We would love for you to come talk story prior to your dive, but if you would like to go directly to the boat please make sure you have your certification card on your person or have emailed us a copy of your c-card and have signed the electronic waiver.

Junior Open Water Diver and Scuba Diver Requirements:

For safety reasons we require Junior Open Water Divers, ages 10-11, to be with a private guide.  Divers ages 12-17 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian diver or private guide.

For safety reasons we require those with only a PADI Scuba Diver Certification to dive with a private guide.  A PADI Scuba Diver Certification is given to those that only complete the first 2 check out dives of their Open Water certification.

Frequently Asked Questions
As long as possible! Your underwater time will be determined by your air consumption and comfort level. You will be diving twice, in two different locations. We use 80 cf tanks, but 63 cf tanks are available, upon request, for the petite diver.
All dive gear is included, but if you have some of your own personal equipment (mask, snorkel, fins) please bring them along with you, if you like them! Come wearing your swimsuits and bring a towel, reef safe sunscreen (S4 is available for purchase in the shop), hat, sunglasses, etc.
We welcome the non-divers of your party to enjoy a morning of snorkeling off the Honu One. Snorkelers must be 8 years of age or older, able to swim, have prior snorkeling experience, and those under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times.
Terms & Conditions
  • Please be informed of our 48 hour cancellation policy. You may make changes or cancellations to your reservations up to 48 hours prior to the trip without penalty. Afterwards, all changes, cancellations, or no shows will not be issued a refund. The only exception to this policy will be if we receive a medical note from a local doctor for a treatment/exam which must have taken place within 48 hours of the check in time of the missed dive. This does not waive the companion diver.

Well-organized dive boat with multipurpose trips
Overall:
This boat is purpose-built for diving and holds 18+ divers or lots more snorkelers. There is ample space to sit on top or the front of the boat, or under the roof/inside if you don't want to be in the sun. Each diver has a station along the edges with their gear and tanks, and there are about six divers per guide. They do a really good job of keeping track of all the divers- knowing your name and ... moresetting up/moving all the gear for you. Some guides did a better job than others of checking in with their divers under water and pointing out interesting animals, but we did see cool stuff each day, including mantas, octopus, lots of dolphins, and a whale. We dove six different sites with them, which depended on ocean conditions and what else was going on with the guests that day. A couple of the sites had short swim-throughs. Sometimes there were snorkelers or people doing certification dives, and that seemed to affect the type of site we visited. The day with no snorkelers, we went to a couple sites where the bottom was almost completely covered in coral. All of the guides and boat crew were really friendly and helpful.

Great trip would do it again!!!
Overall:
My husband and I booked a morning snorkel charter with Kona Honu Divers, I had never been snorkeling before and I must say our guide Sandy was really great. My husband does great on a boat, however I was a bit ill and Sandy really stepped up and was quite patient and supportive with me. Her attentiveness really helped out and I wound up having a great time. We were thrilled to see butterfly fish, ... moreyellow tang and crown of thorns, overall we really had a great time!

Great Dive Shop and Boat
Overall:
I just spent a week in Hawaii with my dad and a friend and we did a bunch of shore dives and boat dives. We rented our tanks from Kona Honu Divers who provided excellent service (thank you Sandy!) and had great rental prices.  We also did a number of boat dives with them. I've done a number of boat dives in my diving career, but this is the first time I've experienced "valet diving". When it's time ... moreto go in the water, they have you sit at the end of the boat and they bring your tank/reg/BC to you and help you get it on. Between dives they swap your tanks for you and have a ton of snacks and fresh pineapple available for you. A warm, fresh water rinse is available at the end of the boat after each dive. After the last dive, they rinse all of your gear for you using not just water, but add an anti-bacterial cleaner to the water they use to rinse. Their dive masters and boat staff are super nice and helpful and are happy to talk to you about the area, sea life, equipment, or anything else you want to talk about. Frank, in particular, was probably the best dive master I've ever dove with. Super knowledgeable, talkative, and did a great job finding rare sea life and pointing it out to us (eel, octopus, etc.) Also, the pricing on these boat dives is very competitive and I doubt the other dive shops provide this level of service. If you do multiple boat trips with them (we did 4) they give you an increasing discount with each additional trip.

I should also share that their dive boat is huge. There's tons of room to move around and while we did not do the blackwater dive, this would be a perfect boat to do that so that the divers are spaced out and not bumping into each other (happens a lot on smaller boats).

Last thing, remember to bring cash with you if you do a boat dive with them so you can tip. By the end of the trip you'll totally think they deserve a good tip. These guys are great.

If I ever go on a dive trip again to the big island, I'll certainly be a return customer.

Great Dive Trip
Overall:
Have dove with most of the operators on the west side of the island and Kona Hanu is the best. Although a smaller shop they definitely have the best boat with a crew that is helpful/personable. Very knowledgeable with great understanding of dive sites and critters. Will prefer to dive with this group on future visits. Sandwiches and various snacks are available between dives, along with a hot shower ... moreafterwards. They take good care of clients.

My group and I enjoyed diving with PADI instructors Terri, Kevin and Frank. They were personable, fun, very patient, sympathetic, and most importantly professional. Saw fish, octopus, and two reef bridges.
