Description:

The most famous volcanic crater in the world is Mt. Le'ahi, better known as Diamond Head, and is located along the southeast coast of Oahu, at the end of Waikiki.

In the early 1800s, British sailors mistakenly thought the calcite crystals in the lava rocks they saw glimmering from a distance were diamonds, hence the name. Diamond Head is a volcano that has been extinct for 150,000 years. The crater is 3,520 feet in diameter with a 760 foot summit.

The hike led by Kaimana Tours is considered easy to moderate in exertion. It is certainly worth it for the breathtaking, unparalleled view of the coastline. A must-see for any visitor!

This moderate hike ascends to the top of Diamond Head via a series of switchbacks. Although Kaimana Tours rates it as an easy to moderate hike, the staircases at the end are challenging for visitors not in peak shape and might leave you breathless even before you get a look at the gorgeous views from the top. But the rave reviews are nearly universal—this hike is well worth the effort!

Even if rising at dawn is the last thing you want to do on vacation, definitely consider the earliest departure times for the Diamond Head Crater Hike. It doesn't take long before the day heats up and makes the hike even more strenuous. And because it's such a popular destination, it can get crowded at the narrower stretches of the path as more visitors arrive throughout the day.

HELPFUL HINTS

Wear sneakers and comfortable clothes, bring a hat and sunscreen, and drink lots of water. The ascent should take about 30 minutes, depending on how often you stop, leaving you with about 45 minutes explore at the top of the crater before heading back down to meet the shuttle back to Waikiki.

Bring your camera if you have one - the summit offers amazing views of Honolulu! And don't forget a little spending money... the snack cart at the base has tasty rewards for your workout.

While we can usually accommodate most last-minute bookings, we highly encourage those that are checking out our website far in advance to book 2-3 weeks prior to desired date. You never know if there's a convention, special event, or a increase in overall visitors in town, and it would be a shame if the activities that you want to do are sold out because you waited until the last minute. Basically, if you know you want to do it, just book it!
Most companies have a set of centrally located hotels that they do pick ups from. This makes the pickup process short so you can start the tour as soon as possible!

This was a great activity for us on Oahu. Definitely go in the morning before it gets hot. Do NOT wear high heels or flip flops, you need your tennis shoes or hiking boots.
