BIG ISLAND
Dive Type:
Boat Dive
Night Dive
Snorkel Only Ride Along
Manta Ray Night Dive
Inclusions:
Refreshments
Snacks

Description:

The Manta dive or snorkel is an exhilarating underwater experience that is unique to the Kona Coast and one of the top night dives of the world!  We start our adventure at Honokohau Harbor in the afternoon and cruise the Kona coast up to Garden Eel Cove. Divers and snorkelers enjoy the beautiful Hawaiian marine life during the day and come back up for a 1 hour surface interval where we serve light refreshments and sandwiches as we enjoy sunset. After nightfall our knowledgeable crew will take you back into the water to see these gentle giants loop, somersault, and cruise in the beams of light as they funnel the plentiful plankton into their giant mouths.

The divers will settle down on the bottom of the ocean floor and shine their dive lights up to attract the plankton.  Snorkelers, on the surface, will surround a snorkel board, led by a snorkel guide, with lights pointed down.

What is included?

We provide tanks, weights, and dive lights for our divers.  During your surface interval sandwiches, snacks, and water will be provided while you enjoy the Kona sunset.  After your second dive hot chocolate or tea will be available for the boat ride home.

For our snorkelers we have mask, snorkel, fins, and a 5mm wetsuit available for your use.  You will also have a professional snorkel guide with you in the water for the duration of the activity.

Dive Requirements:

Certified Divers: Divers are required to have their Open Water Certification and to bring their certification card (no card = no diving).  We would be happy to help you find your certification, but sometimes we find them and sometimes we don't (which means no diving and no refund) so please let us help you early.  We would love for you to come talk story prior to your dive, but if you would like to go directly to the boat please make sure you have your certification card on your person or have emailed us a copy of your c-card and have signed the electronic waiver.  Remember no c-card = no diving.

You are expected to have been on a recent dive, at least within the past 2 years.  If you have been dry over 2 years we do require a check out dive to be done prior to this activity.

Junior Open Water Divers are welcome to join on the dive, but ages 10-11 are required to have a private guide.  Divers ages 12-17 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian or private guide.

Those with a PADI Scuba Diver rating are welcome to join on the dive, but are required to have a private guide.  A PADI Scuba Diver Certification is given to those that only complete the first 2 check out dives of their open water certification.

Snorkel Requirements:

For safety reasons all snorkelers must be 8 years of age or older, be able to swim, and have prior snorkeling experience.  Those under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times.

Recommended to bring:

Been on a boat before?  Did your stomach get upset?  Never been on a boat?  Get car sick?  Preventative measures like ginger or motion sickness medication, may make your trip more enjoyable.

Bring a towel and something warm to wear for the boat ride home.

Frequently Asked Questions
Unfortunately, since manta rays are wild animals and we cannot guarantee their presence. We are typically very successful in finding mantas for you; however, if they are not around, the costs involved with setting up the dive and getting all our guests to the location will not allow for us to offer you a refund. If you do not see a manta on your night out, you can go again on another night on a space available, standby basis as a snorkeler within the next 7 days. If you wish to dive you will receive a 25% discount. Keep in mind that these spaces may be extremely limited, especially during the busiest times of the year.
Terms & Conditions
  • Please be informed of our 48 hour cancellation policy. You may make changes or cancellations to your reservations up to 48 hours prior to the trip without penalty. Afterwards, all changes, cancellations, or no shows will not be issued a refund. The only exception to this policy will be if we receive a medical note from a local doctor for a treatment/exam which must have taken place within 48 hours of the check in time of the missed dive. This does not waive the companion diver.

My wife and I already dived in many places and out night diving with mantas, did not expect great dives in Kona, but to my pleasant surprise we had great dives in Kona, besides the staff to be very professional and helpful

Night dive with manta rays: what an experience!"

I highly recommend this dive shop and their outing to admire manta rays at night. The price may seem high at first glance but it's worth! Music on board, crackers, tea and hot chocolate, and supervisory staff very competent, especially Jeff who took us to the bottom :-) everything is provided, developed and rinsed after discharge, thank you! Please note that diving is not for beginners! Open water ... morecertification mandatory (and justified).

Our group of six enjoyed every minute of our time with KHD. Both day and night dives were amazing, we all felt very comfortable and every member of the crew was engaging, friendly and educational. The manta rays were incredible, I feel like Lefty, Cara, Diablo and Java and the other rays are new friends. I would most definitely recommend this outfit! Giving four stars only because they need to offer ... moredecaf tea bags...seriously a 5 star experience.

Thanks to the folks at Kona Honu for a bunch of great dive and snorkel outings over 4th of July weekend, especially to Bryce for the expert dive-mastering and Momo for escorting our kids (12 & 10 y.o.) snorkeling topside while mom and dad were down below! Great boat, great service (just strap on your gear and hop into the water, they get everything prepped for you), great crew, it doesn't get better ... morethan that. We also did the manta ray night dive/snorkel with the kids, great setup and experience -- at one point, 3 large mantas taking turns barrel-rolling under our lit-up surfboard until my little girl started to feel like a piece of plankton herself and we had to bail out back to the boat! Props to Vinnie for hauling 10 tourists hanging onto a retrofitted surfboard out to a prime spot.

The guys on the boat really made this a dive to remember! Best dive I have done, sitting on the bottom with Bertha swimming over head, safe and truly amazing dive! Well equipped and super well organised, don't bother with anyone else, just let the team and Kona Honu divers take you out! Thanks Nico for your guidance and experience!!!

Best dives, team, shop equipment and boat. Seriously, I have been with some dive teams around the world but the professionalism and dedication but also the fun they put into it is outstanding. Many thanks for some unforgettable dives. We will come back.

Nice, competent crew - spectacular experience

The Manta Night Dive is the most spectacular thing I have ever experienced. The large manta rays are an impressive species - and we had the great fortune to observe 16 of these impressive animals from the immediate vicinity! The Mantas are also seen for both divers and snorkelers and come on "touching distance" close. The tour with Kona Honu Divers was well organized. Shop and harbor are easy to find, ... moreparking is no problem. Captain Frank and divemaster Taiki were super nice and have excellent introduced in boat and dive sites - both the manta night dive and the dive in front of it (2-tank dive). The equipment makes a good impression, except for the wetsuit, which was a little "worn".
