Description:

Maui has several petroglyph sites most of which are very difficult to access. The Olowalu petroglyphs have been made accessible by the Lahaina Restoration Foundation. Sadly, this has not only opened the site to those wishing to see a piece of Hawaiian history but also to vandals which damaged some carvings with graffitis. There are around a thousand individual petroglyphs in Olowalu, chiseled more than 300 years ago into the solt basalt cliffs.

The meaning of the carvings is still unknown. The drawings depict human as well as animal figures and objects important to ancient Hawaiians such as sails.

In order to reach the Olowalu petroglyphs follow route 30 south from the town of Lahaina until you reach the Olowalu General Store near mile marker 15. At the back of the store you will spot a silver colored water tower as well as a dirt road on the north side. Follow the dirt road for about 400 feet until you see a large mound of rock on your right. A number of stairs and platforms gives you access to carvings on the lower parts of the cliffs. The upper parts are not accessible at the moment.
