Overview:

Our day begins with convenient pickup locations at most hotels and resorts along the Kona & Kohala coast. As we make our way around the north end of the island, we stop for an early lunch in the culturally rich ranch town of Waimea, home to historic Parker Ranch. After lunch we continue east on Hwy 19, as we are on our way to the Hamakua coast. Our first stop, the picturesque Waipio Valley lookout. Have our guide snap a photo as you stand at the edge of a 900-foot sea cliff cascading down to the black sand beach below. Next up, a scenic drive along the Hamakua coast. This historic stretch of lush tropical coastline is consumed by dense vegetation, steep gorges & valleys, sea cliffs, and roadside waterfalls. Just outside of Hilo town we make a stop at Rainbow Falls State Park for an easy access view of the Big Island’s most well known waterfall. After taking in the beauty of Rainbow Falls we head to our final destination, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is a truly unique place that provides excellent natural values for visitors and scientists alike. The 320,000-acre National Park encompasses two active volcanoes, and a diversity in environments ranging from tropical rain forest to arid deserts. With so many highlights to see, this national park can feel overwhelming to visitors, but rest assured that our expert guides will make it easy to explore the park with informative narration throughout the day. We’ll take you to the “can’t-miss” points of interest around the summit caldera, all the while our guides will provide interpretation on the geology, volcanism, fauna, and the endemic flora found throughout the park. Just before night fall we serve a warm and hearty dinner within park boundaries, then head over to our final stop of the day, Jaggar Museum. It is here at Jaggar Museum that we will enjoy our last few moments in the park after sundown. The Jaggar Overlook provides a panoramic view of Kilauea caldera, and the breathtaking glow of a lava lake inside Halemaumau crater.

What The Trip Includes:
  • Very Informative and educational narration from our highly trained guides.

The Weather & Climate:

Island weather is unpredictable, and the Big Island is no exception as it is home to an abundance of climates and natural environments. This tour travels through many of these climates as we journey around the north end of the island to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. In fact, just within the national park there are several climates ranging from lush rainforests to arid desert. It is best to be prepared for a variety of conditions. Wear layers of clothes to provide comfort. The Kilauea Visitor Center is at 4000’ elevation where the temperature is typically 15 degrees cooler than at sea level. Conditions can change by the hour and it may become rainy and chilly. We study the weather daily so we can make the best plans for an enjoyable experience. Parts of our itinerary are subject to change due to the weather, and we will cancel a tour if it is deemed unsafe or has a very high chance of poor scenic conditions. We do not guarantee weather.

Frequently Asked Questions
Although this adventure does not involve excessive hiking, we do walk through potentially wet, and muddy conditions. A 15-20-minute walk on an asphalt path with stairs is required to view Thurston Lava Tube.
Volcanic viewing conditions can change very fast. For this reason, we cannot guarantee lava viewing conditions. However, it is very consistent to observe the brilliant glow of a lava lake inside Halema’uma’u Crater from the Jaggar Museum Overlook. At times the level of the lake is high enough to see splattering and the red lake itself, but most often the lake is just below the rim, and not directly visible. To stay updated on the most recent conditions at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, you can contact our reservations department, or visit this USGS HVO website to see webcams and other scientific data.
Between 10-12 hours depending on your pickup location.
Our day begins with convenient hotel and resort pickup locations all along the west side of the Big Island. First Kailua-Kona, then as we head north we stop at Waikoloa Resort, Mauna Lani Resort, Hapuna Prince and Mauna Kea Beach Hotel.
This tour travels through a variety of climates and weather conditions including potentially heavy rain and fog. As we journey around the island you will see how weather conditions can change very fast for better or worse. Tours will be canceled if we anticipate road closures or other dangerous conditions.
It is important to be prepared for all possible conditions. We advise guests to bring several layers of clothing, a sweater or hoodie, long pants, light jacket, hat and covered shoes. We will provide umbrellas and rain ponchos.
Light snacks, sunblock, sunglasses, camera, and backup camera batteries. For environmental reasons we do not provide individual bottled water. However, we will provide large containers of clean filtered water and paper cups available all day.
As for wildlife, the list is quite long. We see the following feral animals (domestic animals gone wild): pigs, goats, sheep, mongoose, and cats. We see the following native animal’s species less frequently: Hawaiian Owl (Pueo), Hoary bat, Nene (goose), Apapane, I’O(hawk), Golden Plover. We also see many native plants. Along our route we can see Koa, Mamane, Naio, Pukiawe, Hapu’u fern and Ohia trees.
Yes, our tours are fully narrated in English. We have a high quality PA system in each van. Our guides have a wide variety of knowledge and special interest in the islands. We try to relate that information in a way that is fun, educational and appropriate to the group.

Highlight of my trip on Hawai'i Island
Overall:
This tour definitely set itself apart from any other tour I've been on. Firstly our guide Arthur was fantastic, friendly and extremely knowledgeable of the island and of volcanoes. Another bonus was that the group was size was kept to a minimum, there were only 5 others on my tour. ... more
The tour is for the whole day (12 hrs) and Arthur was able to show us around all the key island sites, introduce us to fresh island fruits and ended the tour with the amazing sites of the Volcano national park where we had the opportunity to walk through the lava tube and see both the lava field and lastly the bubbling lava of the Kilauea crater.
In my opinion for anyone visiting Hawai’i Island this tour is absolutely a must.

Best tour of our entire vacation!
Overall:
Day 2 in the Big Island, I booked us on a 12-hour Kilauea Summit Adventures tour. To be honest, I wasn't sure how it'll go and whether my parents and their friend would be up for it or not. But I was told most of the time we'll be in a 14-seater van with not too much of walking. Turned out, we were the only 4 people who signed up for that day's tour so it was our PRIVATE tour and my dad could take ... morehis time taking photos! Our guide Art was fabulous! He was knowledgeable, thoughtful and funny too. The fee doesn't include lunch, but included 4 big plateful of local fruits, dinner and hot beverages. A very good deal. We drove around the entire Big Island and spent hours at the Hawai'i Volcano National Park, where we saw two active volcanoes, lava tube, cooled lava field, crater, steam vents and lava glow. The stars were a bonus! My dad was able to take some gorgeous pictures with the lava glow in the background and sky full of stars!! We didn't get back to the hotel until 11pm, but it was well worth it!

Best trip of the Vacation
Overall:
Absolutely the best trip we had during our stay. During the 12 hr tour we saw so much of the island and heard a great deal about it. The service was top notch and well planned out. The highlight was seeing the Kilauea lava shooting up out of the fire pit. Our guide Arthur was a great, as a local he knew everything about the island. And as a degreed Geologist he knew a vast wealth of everything that ... morewas around us. Also it was nice that he truly loved his job and was a blast the be around. If you want a great time take this tour you will not regret it.

Amazing time
Overall:
My wife and I really enjoyed our time with the tour. I felt we saw a very good representation of the island with great tidbits of information. The guide, whose name i cannot recall, was exceptional in every way. Only hiccup was that the cafe we had dinner at was serving a Mongolian bbq instead of the food we selected. ... more
Honestly, it didn't bother us one bit and i fully realize the tour company has zero control over that aspect.
Very worth the money. Highly recommended.

12 hour exploration of the east side of the big island
Overall:
4 of us booked this 12 hr tour on the recommendation of the Hapuna Prince hotel concierge and it was just as promised. Well planned & timed. Total passengers were 6 in a 14 seat mini coach. Big widows. Essentially toured the eastern side of the big island from north to south. Stops well planned. Arrived at volcano NP at about 4 saw lava tubes, steam vents, lava fields & visitor center. The dinner ... morewas good as promised and then just at sunset arrived at the crater & saw the glow as the sun set the lava became more visible- stunning! Art, our guide was fantastic - explaining the fascinating geology of the island and history...he made the trip! Highly recommend. Next visit we will do the Mana Kae summit tour from this outfit.

Arthur was a very caring and informative guide, but be prepared for a big day
Overall:
This tour was really good for getting to understand all to diversity of the Big Island. If we had just stayed in Kona we would have seen only the volcanic, barren ground, where with this tour we also got to see fantastic rainforest areas and of course the mighty volcano. Our guide Arthur was very caring and informative, being a local himself he has lots of first hand knowledge. We enjoyed seeing the ... morevolcano, although the lava was not as visible as we had hoped. The walk through the lava tube was a highlight and the dinner at the army barracks was great. If you are doing this tour from Kona be prepared for a lot of driving as the Island is large to get around and the volcano really needs to be viewed at night. We left our hotel at 9.20am and did not get back to 10pm, but was worth it. Thanks Arthur.

Overall:
We are under 21 and booked the tour to see something of Hawai'i and to see the Vulcano. We saw the most of the north coast, part of the west and east coast, the rainbow falls, of course the Vulcano and by night the lava. It was a encrideble day. The tourguide was really nice and had a big knowledge. Thank you ☺

Overall:
The only reason I didn't give this a 5 was because it was an awfully long, long day that entailed a lot of driving but covered a huge part of the island. I would have preferred that the focus of this trip be the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. It was nice to see Waipi'o Valley and Rainbow Falls with a stop for fresh fruit mid-afternoon but I would have preferred, as I said, to spend more time at the ... morePark. Our guide, Arthur, was exceptional. He was a font of information and filled a lot of the drive time with facts and information about the geography and history of the island - bravo Arthur. I definitely recommend this trip to see the island and get the scoop on it and volcano - just be prepared for a 12-hour day (plenty of bathroom breaks).
