Description:

Explore the island’s significant and stunning cultural sites, and learn how its ecological systems function.  Visit some of Maui’s most scenic locations: Haleakala National Park, Iao Valley, and Kealia Wildlife Refuge on this immersive tour. Go to Maui’s sacred mountains, forbidden Iao Valley (once only accessible to royalty), and bucolic Upcountry Maui; and gain fascinating insights into Hawaii’s ancient culture, weather conditions and the natural resources and practices that helped sustain island life.

Our knowledgeable guide will share a wealth of information on a variety of topics, such as Hawaiian cultural and farming practices; war and peace-time living (bird-watching, food practices, fishing, climate zones); how Hawaiians practiced malama aina (land stewardship); and the ancient ahupuaa watershed system.

Tour Overview (*denotes stops made):

  • Café O’Lei* – Enjoy an all-you-can-eat continental breakfast prior to your journey. Included in your tour price.
  • Haleakala Summit and National Park*– Known as the “House of the Sun,” this dormant volcano towers at over 10,000 feet above sea level, and is renowned for its starkly beautiful volcanic landscape – home to many endemic and endangered species including the lovely Silversword plant – and magnificent vistas of the island.
  • Lavender Café and Farm* – Kick back and enjoy a classic picnic in this fragrant Upcountry Maui spot.
  • Iao Valley State Park – This Park was once a famous battleground where King Kamehameha defeated Maui island’s warriors in his quest to unite the Hawaiian islands. A National Natural Landmark, the valley is also the site of a burial ground for Hawaiian alii (royalty) and today, home to a lush botanical garden.
  • Iao Needle – This striking 1,200-foot land formation within the state park looks like a stand-alone column, but is actually the narrow edge of an ancient volcanic ridge.
  • Kepaniwai Heritage Gardens* – This unique and beautiful park celebrates various ethnic groups that collectively gave Hawaii its nickname, “melting pot of the Pacific.”
  • Kealia National Wildlife Refuge* – One of the few natural wetlands remaining in the Hawaiian Islands, the refuge is a favorite hangout of endangered wetland birds as well as migratory birds from Asia, Alaska, and Canada. The wildlife refuge is closed on Holidays and weekends.
Important Information:
  • It can get very cold at the summit of Haleakala. Temperatures commonly range between 40 F and 65 F, but can drop much lower. For your comfort, we strongly encourage lightweight, layered clothing that will keep you warm even in wet weather, and sturdy, comfortable shoes.
  • Valley Isle Excursions vehicles are equipped with an oxygen generator and an automatic external defibrillator. However, guests are advised to exercise caution due to reduced oxygen levels at Haleakala’s higher elevations. Expectant mothers and guests with heart or respiratory conditions should check with their doctor prior to visiting Haleakala National Park.
  • Routes and time may be modified or restricted due to circumstances beyond Roberts Hawaii and Valley Isle Excursions’ control.
