Be part of the F.U.N., RideTheRim of Waipi’o on one of our brand new ATVs. Children 5 – 15, the elderly or folks not wishing to ride an ATV (even at the last minute, space available) enjoy our open air buggy – a Polaris Ranger –  driven by the tour guide. The Ranger brings up the rear on our tours.

There are 2 ATV tours per day. Check-in at the Waipi’o Valley Artworks in Kukuihaele near Waipi’o Valley, northwest of Honokaa.

  • AM check-in 8:50AM (returns at ~12:30pm)
  • PM check-in  12:50PM (returns at ~ 4:30pm)
  • Tour Duration: 3+ hours
We meet at Waipi’o Valley Artworks – the best little art gallery on the island – in beautiful downtown Kukuihaele. Allow some time and be sure to browse before or after your tour for that special something – they’ve got it all.

Equipment & Requirements
Our ATVs are Honda Rancher 400s and 420s, all automatic, 4 wheel drive and clutch-less. Easy to drive.
All manufacturer’s recommendations and insurance requirements are strictly observed. YES you will need to wear a helmet.

  • Ages 16 and over
  • No tandem riding
  • 100-350 pounds

No experience necessary. A comprehensive safety orientation and demonstration drive is mandatory. If, in our guide’s opinion, you do not appear to reliably control the machine during the orientation, we will decline your participation and refund your money. Likewise, if you feel that you are not comfortable on the machines, you may decline participation and receive a refund. You may also choose to ride the buggy, space available, with no refund of price difference.

Safety gear mandatory and provided. Yes, helmets are absolutely mandatory – no exceptions. We highly recommend long pants and closed-toe shoes, but do not police your attire. You do not need bug spray at all, but sunscreen may be advisable. A note about windward side weather: it simply cannot be predicted and there is nothing like it on the mainland anywhere. You will pass through three distinct climate zones on your way to us from the Kona side. Most of our days are cool and comfortable and most of our rain is one cloud at a time coming off the ocean as a condensate mist. Those clouds occasionally have real rain and large droplets but they are nearly always fleeting. We travel in both of those rains described and many locals wait to ride on the rainy days. We do not travel in lightning storms (rare), rain storms or high winds. We reserve the right to cancel when weather is, in our opinion, inclement. This includes high winds. We provide rain ponchos. You will receive a refund if we cancel due to weather. Waipio Valley is mystical and ‘mistical’ and is occasionally socked in; this is beyond our control.

What to Bring with You:

Adventure Clothing Suggested. We highly recommend long pants and closed-toe shoes, but do not police your attire. You do not need bug spray at all, but sunscreen may be advisable. You may bring a light jacket, but remember it is an adventure tour and anything you wear will get dirty; water socks or reef shoes are useful on the slippery rocks. Wear your bathing suit under your clothes. We do have a lua up top, but it is rather primitive. Cargo nets store your gear on the machines.

Swimming – We swim under a secluded waterfall at the top and back of the valley before the same water goes over the pali (cliff) as Hi’ilawe Falls; the water is about 72 degrees year-round. Our changing facilities are quite primitive, so wear your swimsuits under your clothing and bring a towel. Water shoes, water socks, reef walkers (however you might call them) are suggested as the smooth river rocks are slippery The waterfall pool is usually only chest deep in most spots. As this area is a watershed, there are times when the water is high and we reserve the right to cancel swimming when the conditions are clearly hazardous.

Frequently Asked Questions
Click on the red "Book It" button and you will see live availability. Keep in mind availability changes constantly, so make sure to book in advance!
H Tours Hawaii is a "one stop shop" for all the best activities in the Hawaiian Islands. Since we work with many providers, reservations are necessary. WE HIGHLY recommend making reservations, as many activities are at a discount when you reserve in advance. Some providers even charge higher for those "walking in" because they know chances are you're not going to walk away. Finally, a reservation ensures you have a space on the tour. Trust us you don't want to spend so much time and money to come to Hawaii and then miss out on an activity because they were booked out!
Choose the tour you are interested in, click the red “Book It” button adjacent to the tour information, and complete the booking form.
Most companies, if not all, require you to call them if you're trying to book something 2-3 days in advance. Do you really want to be spending your valuable time in Hawaii calling around to desperately find something that is available to do? While we can usually accommodate most last-minute bookings, we highly encourage those that are checking out our website far in advance to book 2-3 weeks prior to desired date. You never know if there's a convention, special event, or an increase in overall visitors in town, and it would be a shame if the activities that you want to do are sold out because you waited until the last minute. Basically, if you know you want to do it, just book it!
Gratuity is never required but if you enjoyed your experience, a tip is always greatly appreciated!

An Amazing Family Experience!
Overall:
What an amazingly beautiful experience! Not only fun, but a cultural learning experience given to us by our wonderful guides Angel and Omar! Our family ranged in age from 17-80. Two rode in the buggy behind the ATV's and loved the trip as well. The trails were on private land which lead to areas you could never see on your own-an amazing swim in the sacred waters Waihaloa where the kings used to bathe-and ... morethen on to viewing the twin waterfalls. Each stop was more beautiful than the last and we were filled with the history of the valley by our guides that grew up in the Waipio area. I would highly suggest this adventurous trip that can accommodate many ages! The Hawaiian people exude the Aloha spirit and we felt it throughout our excursion!

Fun trip
Overall:
Went ATVing with my husband, I have never ridden one before but picked it up very quickly. The staff was friendly and very helpful. The ride was fun, safe and slightly muddy. The stops were breathtaking and one of the highlights of our trip. Learned a lot about Hawaii history and agriculture. Highly recommend.

Best Excursion On The Big Island
Overall:
I recently went on the Ride the Rim excursion. We took a private tour and had 2 guides. The guides loved their job and they loved their culture. They were very informative and told you history and culture of Waipio Valley. The atv ride got your adrenaline pumping. I wish we could have stayed out longer. We had 3 main stops. I enjoyed all 3. They also setup a nice lunch at the base of a fresh water ... morepond with a waterfall. This was everything Hawaii - Mahalo to the guides - This was a trip to remember.

Amazing views, really fun activity!
Overall:
My husband and I had initially wanted to do the horseback ride into Waipio Valley, but my hubby exceeded the weight limits (he's 6'4" and 240 lbs, the limit we were quoted was 230 lbs). We signed up for an afternoon tour of the Waipio Valley in a side-by-side UTV (think golf cart on steroids). There were 8 of us tourists in all - 4 on ATVs, 2 as passengers in the 4-person buggy, and us 2 in the UTV. ... moreJay and Pat were great guides and were really knowledgeable about the area. The UTV ride was *super* fun - you get to climb up and down some moderately steep hills in the woods, splash through some big puddles, and see some amazing scenery. It also allowed us to do something active (quicken the pulse, one might say) without killing ourselves, particularly as we were sore from hiking at Volcano and Pololu Valley). The weather was perfect, affording beautiful views of the Waipio Valley from above. One of the stops was at a small waterfall with pond, where we took a (really cold) dip and snacked on some Costco goodies that our guides brought. Overall, I loved our experience and would highly recommend!

A view you can never get
Overall:
We had an extra day so we signed up for the ATV ride. Great experience and the locals running things really were into the cultural heritage in and around the area, which made for a very informative and beautiful ride. They had buggies for the people who could not ride the ATV's or would drive you around with the rest of the group. Water falls and fantastic views of the Waipio Valley you can't get ... morefrom the tourist lookout. A little spendy but worth it overall.

Our favorite tour of our entire honeymoon!
Overall:
I cannot say enough about this tour! I was nervous about riding an ATV since I had never done it before. The instructors and guides were fantastic, very focused on safety. My husband and I ended up taking out a side by side ATV together. We had a blast!!!!!!! And the stops along the tour were absolutely breathtaking. Thank you Brendon, Pat, and Jay! You guys were right on!!

Breathtaking Sights
Overall:
We booked this tour last minute (do not recommend doing this) and was lucky enough to be included. We used a side by side buggy because all the other slots and ATV's were taken. I didn't mind at all, as a matter of fact I would suggest using the side by side because it was easy to drive (just like a car) and it was more comfortable in my opinion. The guides we had were very friendly, polite, funny ... moreand informative. You could tell that they were all very sincere in their love of this beautiful piece of Hawaiian history. This tour was well worth the money. We couldn't have visited this wonderful landmark on our own. Bring swim shoes, your feet will thank you if you plan to get in the water. Long pants were suggested but in the buggy it really wasn't necessary.
