On the Beach West of the Turtle Bay Resort

Turtle Bay

Highlights:
  • Very good for kayaking
  • Very nice area for relaxing at the beach
  • Turtle Bay Resort
Description:
Turtle Bay, located on the north shore of Oahu between Kuilima Point and Protection Point covers an area of about 5 miles of beach and 12 miles of hiking trails. The area is one of the last underdeveloped of Oahu. The area is recognized for very nice rock formations. The turtle Bay beach is sandy, but the ocean bottom is rocky  and has sharp limestone all along its length which makes for poor swimming conditions.

Surfing, diving, kayaking, and fishing are the activities most undertaken at Turtle Bay. The area just behind the reef in the near shore waters is the best location for surfing. In the winter months, November to February, the waves are very big, and there is a strong current.

The small island of Papa'amoi can be found on the west side of Turtle Bay. Just near the bay is the Turtle Bay resort. Guests at the resort prefer to go swimming to the neighboring Bayview Beach because there, the ocean bottom is sandy, and the area is protected from high surf. There are also two championship golf courses at the resort

Not many people use the beach at Turtle Bay so it is a quiet place often perfect it you are seeking for a location to relax or have a picnic. There is plenty of shade. Ironwood trees line the back shore of the beach. Turtle Bay has also been a favorite location in the neighborhood for weddings. It is a very romantic place and provide some beautiful sunrise and sunset.
There are no facilities or lifeguards at the beach.

Maybe it's by design but this place don't get a lot of publicity and it's one
Overall:
Maybe it's by design but this place don't get a lot of publicity and it's one of the most relaxing places I've ever visited. My wife and I spent a week on Oahu last week, we spent the first 3 days at Turtle Bay and the rest of our time in Waikiki. Each night at TB we slept with the balcony doors open, it was so relaxing to hear the waves crashing up against the rocks. What's even better was that they ... morehave louvered doors you can slide closed for privacy but still allow you to hear the ocean. We were so disappointed when we got to Waikiki, we opened our balcony door to dirty rooftops, ac units, and noise. We will likely take another trip to Hawaii in about 5 years and we will stay at TB the entire time. The service was great, if you're into golf they have that, it's just a cool place to stay. Unless you're like 21 or just love the "touristy" spots, rent a car and drive straight to TB when you get off the plane.

One of the better resorts I've been to
Overall:
One of the better resorts I've been to. Large, recently renovated rooms, free WiFi, lagoon on one side, waves (for surfers) on another, quite a bit of space to just walk around, horse rides, helicopter rides, etc, etc. On the negative side, some of the food choices are overpriced, and there's still $3 bottles of water in the room. Does anyone ever buy them? Why have them at all? Also, the booking ... morerate is misleading. Add $25 of "resort fee" per day to get the real cost of stay. Another negative (for fitness junkies only) is underequipped and overly warm gym. If someone from the management is reading this: you guys need a seated cable row machine, a squat rack, an Olympic barbell with a set of bump plates going to at least 400lbs total, and heavier dumbbells going to about 120lbs each. 50lbs is the "warmup" weight for trained folks on chest exercises. A Smith machine would be pretty nice as well. And dial the air conditioning down by a few degrees, your customers will thank you. But those are fairly minor complaints on an otherwise great resort experience.

The resort is nice, but the constant nickel and diming by the hotel saps any enjoyment
Overall:
The resort is nice, but the constant nickel and diming by the hotel saps any enjoyment. Prime example, I try to get a night cap at 10pm but the hotel bar wanted to charge a $15 cover for me to get my one drink, when I told them I was a hotel guest they said they would drop the charge to $10. Another example, during check-in the receptionist tells me my room is on a bad floor (second) and then offers ... morea discount to upgrade my room to a private cottage on the beach for only $115 a night. I would avoid this place if possible. Waikiki is fun and has plenty of options (even if it is a bit crowded), and there are plenty of other resorts in Hawaii that have integrity.

My husband and I had our wedding last month at Turtle Bay Resort, and it was
Overall:
My husband and I had our wedding last month at Turtle Bay Resort, and it was beautiful. We were on a tight budget, but Mikilani in Sales helped us come up with really creative solutions to make it possible! Turtle Bay does not require you to use any specific vendors, and we found this flexibility made all the difference as we were able to bring in the vendors which best matched our personalities and ... morebudget. We had our ceremony in the Wedding Pavilion and reception in Pa'akai, and both turned out absolutely perfect, thanks to all the hard work of Dida, Chef Conrad, and Liz, the on-site florist. We were treated like family from every planning email, to our tasting and ultimately the wedding itself. They even accommodated my gluten allergy with a beautiful gluten free menu and cake. The attention to detail was spectacular and I can't say enough good about Turtle Bay!! Dida, the Catering Manager, was so responsive to my questions and very flexible with our requests. She always made time to respond to all my questions and she communicated effectively to make sure that we were all on the same page. My husband loved the fact that she really paid attention to small details, and ensured our every request was fulfilled. One of the things that stood out to me was that she made herself available to me as early as 5 AM on a Sunday (the day of the wedding) for some last minute concerns that I had. She would often work late too because she would be answering some of my emails late into the evening! The catering staff was great too. They were very attentive to the guests and our needs throughout the reception. Our empty plates would be cleared off the table quickly and our beverage glasses were never empty. One of the important things to my husband and I when we were planning the wedding was that we wanted good food. At Turtle Bay, we had GREAT food, and lots of it! Everyone we talked to raved about the food, especially the skirt steak kabobs, the roast big island pork, the mahi mahi and the generous dessert buffet. Shoutouts: Wendell at the front desk saved my life on Wedding Morning when I desperately needed my car parked at 4 in the morning. He could sense my urgency and literally took it upon himself to run (not walk) over to the valet desk to get my car squared away. It is because of Wendell that my wedding day was able to stay on track instead of running late. THANK YOU. Chef Conrad took the time out of his busy schedule to meet with us for our tasting. He accommodated every one of our wishes, even those which may have seemed a little strange. On the wedding day, he and his staff ensured that our wedding had plenty of delicious food and were pampered the whole time. Hosting our guests properly was a major concern of ours, and their execution was perfect. Servers Karen and John in Catering saved my life on the wedding day. Not only did they deliver the most attentive, high end wait staff service I have ever experienced, but Karen even went beyond that and saved me from TWO major, impending disasters. It's because of Karen that I didn't suffer embarrassment on my wedding day. I can't possibly thank her enough! In summary, Turtle Bay is very accommodating and easy to work with. The staff are honest people & extremely helpful. I would recommend them to anyone who dreams of a beautiful wedding day in paradise!

THIS IS ABOUT THE FLORIST NOT THE HOTEL ITSELF
Overall:
THIS IS ABOUT THE FLORIST NOT THE HOTEL ITSELF! Very disappointed. We received excuse after excuse from Liz. She had poor communication and never delivered on her promises. We are an active duty military family and having our wedding home in Hawaii but planning from Ohio where we are stationed. She has made the experience awful. She promised to have some mock up and ideas by Tuesday and we never heard ... morefrom there. Then she promised Thursday. Never head back until I contacted her. She then sent a few pictures of the ugliest bouquets I have ever seen. Nothing like the photos we sent her. We told her exactly what we were looking for and wanted and she seemed to be not even on a close page. I wish I could post a side by side picture of what we sent her and what she sent back. I almost fell to the floor!

We booked through an online travel site
Overall:
We booked through an online travel site. Got a good rate. Check in was easy. Our room was nice, full view of the ocean even though we were suppose to receive partial view. We also had full view of their roof construction that looked terrible and we began to worry about the noise that it would bring so we tried to switch rooms. They said they only had a king with no balcony available so we decided ... moreto wait until the next day to see how bad the construction noise would be. The first night was horrible: we didn't make it past midnight. There was this awful sound coming from the interior wall that was loud and wouldn't stop. By midnight we were very upset and called the front desk because it was very difficult for my husband and I to sleep (although it didn't seem to bother our daughter). At first they wanted to send a technician up to see if it could be fixed. They also said they were all booked for rooms at our price level and had nowhere to put us! So we waited for the technician for a few minutes until realizing that the only thing they could do is tear down the wall to stop the noise. They were wasting our valuable sleep time for our vacation! So we called down again and said we need a new room! The person helping us said that they did have a room, it was a downgrade from what we were currently in because they had "upgraded" our reservation with full ocean view (and full construction view). We took the downgrade happily since that's what we were suppose to have in the first place. Turned out to be a much better room than the first one even with only partial view of the ocean. Thanks but no thanks for the initial upgrade!!! One thing we were very disappointed with is the inconvenience and lost sleep that was caused by having to switch rooms at midnight, yet they never once offered something nice to make up for it. The security manager was very nice but come on people! We had to switch rooms in the middle of the night and you did nothing to say sorry? Not very impressive because we lost part of our night thanks to your room and the noise it was making! The rest of the time was good and the room was quiet. All the staff is very friendly. Every employee we saw gave us big smiles and alohas every time! We were very impressed with that. Housekeeping was very friendly and accommodating. The only other con is that its very busy on the weekend (especially the pool). Not sure if it's like that every weekend or only because of mothers day weekend but the pool area was packed full of people. Another thing is if you plan on taking advantage of the FREE self-parking (included in resort fee) be aware that its tricky because the parking lot gets quite full during the day with beach goers. On many occasions we had a long walk to the hotel. Doesn't seem quite fair when we are paying to stay there. Shouldn't guests have a reserved spot every day regardless of whether the valet is parking the car or you are doing it yourself? We would recommend this hotel. Although we were not happy with the initial room situation, it did smooth out once we moved to a new room. In our case, with the midnight room switch, they didn't go above and beyond to make us feel valued what- so-ever. The hotel itself is 5 stars but with other things factored in the experience was a 3 1/2 for us. Time is precious on vacation and so is sleep. So costing your clients either isn't a nice thing to do!
